I took the style of my city maps and started making various patterns and designs with them, and sticking words in there really has a nice feel. I love playing with word and letter shapes, so this combines some passions. Right on.

This is a sketch for the very first challenge post on Draw the Toy. I was fooling around with his armor and making his gun even bigger. He has such a distinctive face/head that I could put him in any armor that he'd still read correctly. But in the end I went with a more traditional droid body, with more subtle modifications: as seen here.

Here are some more maps from my first game world, named Derranos.

The Kingdom of Porthinia

whose biggest city, Marino, is tucked in between those two lakes.

Marino has had a rough existence. being completely rebuilt three times.

this is the second time

and the third.

you'll notice I get better and fancier with my urban planning and street layouts as time goes by.(this second map of Marino is the newest map from this game world) The buildings with letters on them are temples (built on hills to provide great views.) This world has a very structured pantheon of Deities.

Beltington in the upper right is Wine Country. Auger is the Capital. Fumeröl, waaay on the left is actually in a republic called Stohrn.

Stohrn and the western tradelands, called Cira, can be seen here:

here are two versions of Fumeröl before and after a great war. It's built on the foothills, descending into the plain below.

In college, (and after) I used to play and DM a lot of D&D games. Not one to use an established setting, I always made my own. And to me that means mapping. LOTS of it.

this is fun.

Back in '96 I started a game world with this map.

It's crude and drawn with marker, with no sense of scale, but it's completely serviceable. It also had enough to help my imagination flourish.

there's an island up there off the eastern coast: Lira Sil

That costal city to the middle right? Tomera? it turned into this:

welcome to my insanity.
Tomera is the major center of trade for the region, and led the coup against the ailing Kingdom of Mark to form the Republic of Relussia.

The port city of Fassel, created by the veterans of the 1000 year War between Mark and Meldür, looks like this:

Cord, over there mid-map right is a Mage city. Older than a Dragon's spittoon.

Now here's the thing about Cord. The streets were built in the shape of a complicated "forget" spell, so when viewed above, say by any roving dragon or other flying, intelligent thing, the city would be erased, forgotten and safer for the trouble.

From that first map I built an entire continent, and then a globe, with cultures and races and trade etc. Glorious.
